DC residents blast city officials and MPD for their continued cooperation with federal agents

WASHINGTON — For hours DC residents blasted District officials for the increased cooperation between the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and federal agencies which they argue targets Black, immigrant, and unhoused communities.

The DC Council’s Committee on Justice and Public Safety, chaired by Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto, held the oversight hearing focused on MPD. However, DC residents spent the majority of the time testifying about how they have seen MPD officers and federal agents working hand-in-hand.

Among the speakers was Trenise Wells-Bailey, the wife of 43-year-old Julian Bailey, who was killed by US Marshals earlier this month in Northeast DC. “I want answers,” Wells-Bailey told Pinto as she sobbed…
