2 nabbed in connection with ‘ATM jackpotting’ scheme

BOSTON (WPRI) — Two Venezuelan nationals have been charged in connection with a so-called ATM jackpotting scheme, according to U.S. Attorney Leah Foley.

Moises Alejandro Martinez Gutierrez and Lestter Guerrero, both 29, have each been charged with conspiracy to commit bank theft.

Foley said the men, who may be affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang, are believed to be responsible for both successful and unsuccessful robberies in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

ATM jackpotting schemes typically involve a band of criminals who visit ATMs and install malware directly into the machine’s programming, according to Foley. The malware then forces the ATM to dispense the cash that’s inside it…
