Columbia restaurant owner charged with $232K in alleged tax evasion

COLUMBIA, S.C. — An owner of a well-known Columbia-area restaurant has been arrested and charged with tax evasion, according to the state’s lead revenue agency.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue announced on Thursday that 50-year-old Tyrone Cyrus, an owner of Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles, was charged with four counts of tax evasion.

The agency alleges that, from 2018 to 2021, Cyrus reported roughly $8.2 million in taxable sales. However, investigators claim that actual sales were nearly $11.2 million over that period. With about $3 million in unreported revenue, investigators determined that Cyrus evaded roughly $232,000 in South Carolina sales tax…
