Cell phone ban bill heads to Braun’s desk; Fort Wayne Community Schools a step ahead

INDIANAPOLIS (WANE) – As a bill banning cell phones in middle and high schools statewide makes its way to the governor’s desk, Fort Wayne is already a step ahead.

Tuesday, state lawmakers passed a Senate bill that would prohibit Hoosier students from using their phones in school. In the next step of the process Wednesday, the Senate concurred with amendments made by the House, moving the bill along to Governor Mike Braun.

The concept of banning phones in school is nothing new for Fort Wayne Community Schools. It’s been two years since the district began implementing Yondr pouches, which is now the norm for high schoolers. Also used commonly at entertainment venues, each pouch locks the phone inside, allowing students to keep the devices with them but securing the phones until the school day is over…
