Man who died in Louisville jail was subject to ICE detainer

The Louisville Metro Department of Corrections announced Thursday morning that a 21-year-old Hispanic man died at the city jail – one of more than 20 people who’ve died in custody there since 2021.

LMDC did not release the man’s name because his family hadn’t been notified. But public jail records reviewed by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting show the man was locked up on criminal charges in an assault case and also was subject to an ICE hold that can keep someone behind bars for an extra two days beyond their scheduled release.

LMDC said the man who died had been in custody since Feb. 14. Agency records available online show the only 21-year-old Hispanic man booked into jail on that day was Juan Miguel Munoz Penalver…
