Rhode Island State Police said four people are facing charges stemming from a shooting on Interstate 95 in Providence that shut down the highway for hours in December.
State police said they charged Zachary Martins, 26, of Springfield, Massachusetts; Tory Torres, 20, of Providence; and Jamari Bell, 23, of Cranston with drive-by shootings and numerous gun and other counts.
A fourth suspect, Joseph Carvalho, 27, of Woonsocket, was charged with harboring a criminal.
State police said a shooting led to a three-car crash on Dec. 29 that shut down the southbound lanes near Smithfield Avenue for over two hours.
“During the investigation it was determined that this was a targeted incident where one of the vehicles involved had fired approximately 19 rounds of gunfire at a second vehicle, which was struck approximately 10 times by gunfire,” state police said in a release Thursday. “The two vehicles involved in the shooting incident then caused a motor vehicle crash with a third uninvolved vehicle.”
State police said multiple people were hurt in the shooting and crash, but the injuries were not life-threatening.
