The first Safe Haven Baby Box in South Dakota is now operational. Fire Station 1 in downtown Rapid City got the new addition up and running this week. South Dakota communities have been talking about Safe Haven Baby Boxes for years, even before the body of a baby was found at a Sioux Falls recycling center in 2024.

As February winds down, a local nonprofit is encouraging you to roundup — as in gathering toys to donate to its cause. It’s wall-to-wall toys at Child’s Play Toys in downtown Sioux Falls. Owner Nancy Savage discovered her passion for toys while playing alongside her daughter decades ago at a store in Seattle, Washington.
