When to see March’s ‘blood moon’ lunar eclipse in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Set the alarm a little early Tuesday morning, March 3. We’ve got a total lunar eclipse on the way, and it’ll be visible right here in Memphis before sunrise.

The eclipse begins around 2 a.m. Tuesday as the shadow of the Earth begins to cross over the Moon’s surface. You’ll want to catch the maximum lunar eclipse, which is expected between 5:00am and 6:00am. This is when the Moon is fully inside Earth’s darkest shadow, turning the moon red. If you’ve got a clear western view and a break in the clouds, you should have a great look.

So what’s actually happening? A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the full Moon. Our planet casts a shadow on the Moon’s surface. Unlike a solar eclipse, where the Moon blocks the Sun, this one is completely safe to watch with your naked eye. No special glasses needed…
