Energy advocates push to replace SDG&E with nonprofit power company

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As the high cost of living keeps on scaring thousands of people away from San Diego – a coalition of energy advocates is calling out SDG&E and parent company Sempra Energy – as one of the reasons why families are hurting.

“We are here to acknowledge the stress and pain that thousands of families struggle with here in San Diego. With electric rates going up every year, hard working families have to make tough choices, pay their electric bill to SDG&E or put food on the table,” says Yusef Miller of the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice.

He pointed out the $60-billion-dollar portfolio and the multi-billion in profits just reported by Sempra Energy, this coalition is calling for a nonprofit energy corporation to replace SDG&E.“More than 40 nonprofit public utilities now exist here in California, public utility companies that work for the public, not the shareholders, these companies provide energy at 50-percent the cost of San Diego and make zero profit,” says affordable energy advocate Craig Rose…
