NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News city leaders said the newly adopted Strategic Housing Initiatives Plan — known as the SHIP — will serve as a coordinated roadmap to increase housing supply, diversify housing types, and preserve existing neighborhoods. Officials estimate the city will need more than 20,000 new housing units by 2050 to meet the projected demand.
Mayor Phillip Jones said the plan was developed collaboratively across city departments and in partnership with the local redevelopment and housing authority. The goal, he said, is to transform long-term housing goals into actionable strategies.
