Five homicides in 11 days: February surge of violence tests Newport News after record-low year

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After celebrating record-low homicide numbers for 2025, the city of Newport News is now confronting a sharp spike in deadly gun violence.

So far this month, five men have been killed, and all within 11 days. Three of those deaths happened in just the last week.

On February 14, someone shot a man on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. Another person was shot on February 17 on Jefferson Avenue. Then, someone shot two men on Bellwood Road on February 20. Then, an 18-year-old was killed on 29th Street on February 25…
