In a previous article, I told the story of my grandfather’s discovery of a bison kill site near Slaton. His stories led me to begin exploring the country around our family farm in southern Cochran County, which ultimately led to my greatest find- a discovery that haunts me to this day.
Not far away from our farm lay the remnants of the Mescalero sand dunes in northern Yoakum County. While most of the terrain had been disturbed by farming, there were still active dunes that shifted with the wind. In the midst of them, I had a favorite place to hunt for arrowheads.
I had spotted this area miles away while standing on a hill top; it stood out because it had a different stand of grass and its unusual color led me to it.
