Manhattan – Prosecutors declined the most serious accusation against Gusmane Coulibaly following a disruptive snowball exchange with police officers in Washington Square Park.[1][2]

A social media-fueled snowball fight drew crowds to Washington Square Park on February 24 amid a heavy blizzard. Officers responded to reports of disorder, including people scaling a nearby roof. Video footage captured a large group jeering and hurling snowballs at the uniformed responders as they navigated the scene.[1]

The confrontation intensified quickly. Police described the crowd, largely adults, as blocking park entrances and pelting officers with packed snow and ice chunks. Two officers sought hospital treatment for facial injuries, including lacerations and pain around the eyes and neck. Commissioner Jessica Tisch labeled the actions “disgraceful” and “criminal,” vowing a thorough investigation.[3]

Targeted Arrest Follows Investigation

Authorities identified Gusmane Coulibaly, 27, as a key participant two days later. Body camera and social media videos showed him throwing a snowball that struck Officer Nicholas Johnson in the face. Police arrested him on February 26, initially filing felony assault on a police officer alongside misdemeanor obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct.[2]…
