‘Legal status does not determine their worth before God:’ Richmond-area pastors speak out against deportations

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Richmond-area faith leaders from multiple Christian denominations gathered Friday at Richmond’s First Baptist Church to deliver a unified statement on immigration enforcement.

They joined hands in prayer on the steps of the church and took turns reading portions of a single speech. They condemned rhetoric surrounding immigrants and criticized ICE’s immigration enforcement tactics being carried out across the country, which has caused immigrants in their own congregations to be fearful.

“That dignity does not fluctuate with citizenship, documentation, language, or national origin. A person’s legal status does not determine their worth before God,” said Rev. Taylor Lewis Guthrie Hartman of Second Presbyterian Church.
