Murder case suspended in woman’s slaying outside Stockton church

Criminal proceedings were suspended Thursday during the arraignment of a man accused of killing a woman in December who was found outside a Stockton church.

Luis Zavalza, 47, who was already in custody for a separate crime, appeared in a Stockton courtroom to hear the charges against him. Zavalza is charged with the murder of Arianna Buzenes, who was killed on Dec. 12, 2025. He also faces an enhancement of using a deadly or dangerous weapon – a knife.

Hearings in the case came to a pause due to doubt regarding Zavalza’s mental competency to stand trial…
