Feds say they’ve solved a haunting, decades-old cold case

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Authorities said they solved a nearly 30-year-old cold case when they charged Robert Scott Froberg, a two-time jail escapee, with kidnapping resulting in the 1996 death of 7-year-old Morgan Jade Violi in Kentucky.

United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky Kyle G. Bumgarner announced on Feb. 27 that Froberg has confessed to abducting Morgan and causing her death that summer, shortly after he broke out of an Alabama prison and later a Pennsylvania jail. He was arrested later in 1996 for the prison break and has been in custody ever since, Bumgarner said.

In a packed conference room at the Bowling Green Police Department, law enforcement from Kentucky and Tennessee, press and city officials looked on as Morgan’s parents and family filed into the room.
