Berkeley County rewriting zoning ordinance for first time in over 15 years

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) — Berkeley County is rewriting its zoning ordinance for the first time in more than two decades as officials work to address population growth and changing development needs.

Modernizing an outdated framework

Planning and Zoning Director Alison Simmons said the current ordinance has not been comprehensively updated since the early 2000s.

Officials said one goal of the rewrite is to make the ordinance more accessible to all users.

“Easy to navigate and understand regardless of whether you are a resident, a developer, or a staff member,” Simmons said.
