Longtime Berkeley County deputy Lester Hiers dies at 99

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) — Lester Hiers, a longtime deputy with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office who served for over a decade and influenced generations of deputies, died Saturday at 99.

Hiers joined the sheriff’s office in 1971, when Moncks Corner was protected by just two deputies. They worked six days one week and five the next. Each had one day off a week, and every other Sunday they were on call day and night.

“It was a different job back then. They didn’t go two and three to a call. He didn’t have a microphone on his lapel where he could get back up. He was on his own once he got there,” retired Director of Logistics and Mobility Johnny Hill said…
