Man crashes, kills another driver after exiting I-77 at high rate of speed, Rock Hill Police say

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A Fort Mill man is in jail after Rock Hill Police say he caused a deadly crash Friday afternoon.

Officers said it happened around 3:17 p.m. on Celanese Road near I-77. 21-year-old Joel Laron Smith was reportedly driving a Hyundai Sonata off the interstate at a high rate of speed. He was reportedly unable to control it, and the car went airborne as it traveled across a median.

Smith’s Sonata then crashed into a Ford Ranger pickup truck before continuing out of control, hitting a Toyota Sienna minivan also on Celanese Road. The driver of the minivan, identified so far only as a woman, was taken to a nearby hospital but later died…
