Spartanburg County to vote “no” on Project Spero tax incentive after public backlash

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Spartanburg County Council will not offer a tax incentive to Project Spero, a multibillion-dollar data center proposal that drew weeks of strong public opposition.

Council Chairman Manning Lynch made the announcement Thursday during a press conference at the county administration building — just one week after a contentious public hearing where hundreds of residents raised concerns about rising energy bills and potential long-term health impacts.

The press conference opened with remarks from several state lawmakers about regulating data centers statewide. Confusion could be seen on faces, as residents braced for what many expected would be bad news.
