KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In August, 10News took a tour of the I-40 worksite on the North Carolina side, where an almost 5-mile stretch was damaged by flood waters. Last year, the North Carolina Department of Transportation estimated costs would be in the range of $1 billion. Recently, they revised that estimate to around $2 billion.
NCDOT’s Western Communications Manager David Uchiyama said that change is the result of new information.
“There is more geological information available now that was not available beforehand. That includes the safest and best long-term measures include digging deeper into the bedrock. That makes things a little more expensive, but that also means things will last a lot longer,” he said…
