WINNEBAGO, Ill. (WIFR) – A stop sign folds out from a school bus. Flashing lights awake and flip from top to bottom as the vehicle’s engine churns in the Winnebago School District’s parking lot.
“Stop means stop,” declared Catherine Welch, the district’s transportation director. “This is not an option. You have to stop.”
Illinois law requires drivers to hit the brakes when buses extend the their stops picking up or dropping off students. But Welch acknowledges some motorists forget the rules…
