Winnebago County Board approves funding for Sheriff’s Office radio replacement

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Board voted unanimously in favor of funding a multimillion-dollar radio replacement program for the sheriff’s office. The vote comes amid allegations that the department violated purchasing laws.

At last night’s board meeting, members voted to replace 330 Motorola Starcom radios used by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Corrections, Animal Services, and Probation/Detention departments.

According to the sheriff’s office, the current radios were purchased in 2016 and have reached the end of life, and no longer meet reliability and performance standards…
