Jack Dorsey cites leaps in AI technology as Block lays off nearly half its staff

A financial tech firm founded by St. Louis native Jack Dorsey announced this week that it laid off just under half of its 10,000-person staff, some of whom work in downtown St. Louis.

Dorsey announced Thursday on X, the platform he co-founded in 2006, that Block Inc., which owns Square and CashApp, cut 4,000 people.

In 2021, the company renovated spaces in the former Post-Dispatch building at 900 N. Tucker Blvd., where it currently houses its St. Louis-based employees. It’s unclear if any of those employees will be impacted by the dismissals…
