Missouri AG alerts public to scam targeting inmate families

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office is investigating reports of a fraudulent scheme in which a caller falsely claims to represent the Missouri Department of Corrections and seeks money from relatives of inmates housed in the Christian County Jail.

Attorney General Catherine Hanaway described the alleged conduct as a calculated attempt to exploit families during a sensitive period.

“We are investigating a brazen new scam against the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and incarcerated individuals,” Hanaway said. “Using the Christian County Sheriff’s Office’s time of grief and reflection to target individuals is appalling. We ask that any Missourians approached by this scammer report the call to our hotline at 800-392-8222.”…
