City of Albuquerque closes applications for new KiMo Theatre manager

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –The city was looking for new leadership to help run the historic KiMo Theatre in Downtown Albuquerque, but now months into that process, that effort has stalled, with Albuquerque’s Arts and Culture Department quietly closing down its search. So what’s behind the decision?

First opened as the city’s premier “movie palace” 99 years ago, the KiMo Theatre remains one of Albuquerque’s most recognizable landmarks both outside and in. Dr. Shelle Sanchez, Director of the Arts and Culture Department, points to its unique style: a blend of Art Deco and pueblo iconography.

Sanchez said that although the administration is considering signing on a partner that would help optimize the theatre’s operations and bring in more activity, it’s not an emergency. She added, and the theatre is running strong with a small but mighty staff…
