On Feb. 28, 2001, the Nisqually earthquake shook Western Washington with a magnitude of 6.8, causing widespread damage and disruption across the region.
Now, the Pierce County Council and Executive Ryan Mello jointly issued a proclamation recognizing Feb. 28, 2026, as Nisqually Earthquake 25th Anniversary Day, honoring the dedication of the first responders that day and the resilience of the community, a release said.
The proclamation was also made to help raise awareness about the importance of earthquake readiness. When the Nisqually earthquake happened, it taught Pierce County the value of resilience and preparedness, with its Emergency Management team working diligently every day to ensure everyone who lives in Pierce County knows how to stay safe when the next earthquake strikes, the release noted…
