Alaska Zoo celebrates International Polar Bear Day with a special feast for Kova and Cranbeary

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Blocks of frozen meat and other treats served with a dash of whipped cream were on the menu Friday at the Alaska Zoo. The special treats were meant to mark International Polar Bear Day with the zoo’s resident bears, 24-year-old Cranbeary and 4-year-old Kova.

“Obviously on Polar Bear Day we want to celebrate them, and we want to say thank you,” said Zoo Education Director Rich Capitan. “So we are going to give them some interesting, fun things to chew on and play with.”

Capitan said education is an important part of the day which the zoo celebrates in partnership with the organization Polar Bears International, a nonprofit that focuses on protecting the bears and their sea ice habitat…
