‘We are so determined to get this right’: JCPS superintendent hopeful district is coming out of budget crisis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools, Dr. Brian Yearwood, is promising that the financial situation in Kentucky’s largest school district is finally starting to stabilize.

Dr. Yearwood delivered his first State of the District address on Friday after taking the superintendent job in the summer of 2025, and he couldn’t ignore the $188 million budget deficit that has led to job cuts and plans to close schools within Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS).

“Some days, though, I’m convinced the deficit has its own seat at the table,” he expressed. “It shows up early, and it stays late, and never misses a conversation.”…
