First responders hold mass casualty training event

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — On board the Elizabeth River Ferry docked at Town Point Park in Norfolk, local, state and federal first responders are conducting a simulated mass casualty event as part of a search and rescue maritime law enforcement exercise sponsored by the Port of Virginia.

They along with the U.S. Coast Guard, are responsible for port security.

“Well, we’re helping them by keeping the port open and secure, that allows from a national security perspective,” said Bill Burket, senior director of the maritime incident response team and business continuity with the Port of Virginia. “But that really falls on the U.S. Coast Guard. And we’re here to support the U.S. Coast Guard and help them meet their missions.”…
