No charges filed against SLCPD officer who fatally shot ninja star-wielding suspect

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office (SLCoDA) announced that they will not be filing charges against a Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) officer who fatally shot a man in January 2025.

On January 9, 2025, shortly after 1:30 a.m., SLCPD Officer Clifton Payton conducted a traffic stop on a white Ford truck. At the time, Payton had a female passenger doing a ride-along in his patrol car.

While he was running the driver’s information in his patrol vehicle, a man, later identified as Chandler Dean Grillone, knocked on his window.

Payton exited his vehicle and told Grillone to go to the front of his patrol vehicle. Reportedly, Grillone did not comply and hit Payton in the arm and in the face, while also asking him if he wanted to die…
