Local man serves his community one bike at a time

SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane transplant is turning his passion for biking into a grassroots effort to help kids stay active and safe, one repaired bike at a time.

In the Hillyard neighborhood, near the corner of Pittsburg and Columbia, the sound of spinning tires and clanking tools fills a small bike shop where Lonnie Scott spends much of his time fixing up bikes for local children — completely free of charge.

Scott says when he moved to Spokane about five years ago, he wanted to do more than just settle in…
