This Arizona Zoo Just Welcomed a New Addition to Its Giraffe Exhibit

No matter the species, the arrival of a new baby is a wonderful time. The cuteness expands even more when we’re talking about baby animals. While most of the time we see videos of baby cows, dogs and cats being born, the newest addition to the Reid Park Zoo is far from your average event.

Recently, the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Ariz., announced the arrival of a new giraffe to their family. Born on Monday, Feb. 23, the arrival of the new calf is not only important because of the seriously cute images that it has brought, but it also marks an important step towards the conservation of these animals.

A New Giraffe Calf Is Born in Arizona

Born to Penelope, an adult female reticulated giraffe, the calf is part of the zoo’s Giraffe Species Survival Plan to help keep the species’ population viable. According to Aaron Ramsey, the zoo’s director of animal care, “The new calf was born at 4:10 p.m. on Monday, was standing a little over an hour after his birth, and nursing shortly after that. That is exactly where we wanted him to be.” The calf was also reported to weigh 180 pounds and stand at 6 feet tall.

While I’m certain many are ready to see the calf in person, guests will have to wait as both mom and baby are enjoying bonding time in private. No details have been released on any potential names or a public reveal, as the zoo is taking all the steps necessary to ensure they both remain healthy and stable. “We don’t quite know when he will go onto the main habitat yet, we will let his behavior and mom’s behavior guide that decision,” Ramsey said…
