Dual-language public elementary school will be expanded in Allentown

The Allentown School District presented plans Thursday for a major expansion at the Sonia Sotomayor Dual Language Immersion Academy to accommodate growing enrollment and support the school’s transition to a Pre-K through eighth grade program.

The district’s board of directors reviewed the capital project at its Feb. 26 meeting. The initial phase calls for installing 10 modular classrooms totaling just over 7,000 square feet of instructional space.

The academy currently serves 146 students in Pre-K through second grade. Under the expansion plan, the school will add one grade level each year and is projected to need the additional portable classrooms by the 2028-29 school year when it extends through fifth grade…
