Baltimore Parents Plead Guilty After 5-Year-Old Found Dead from Severe Malnutrition in Home

A heartbreaking child abuse case in Baltimore has ended in guilty pleas from both parents after their 5-year-old daughter was found dead inside their home in 2024. The case has shocked the community and raised renewed concerns about child welfare and early intervention in abuse cases.

Bernice Byrd and Gerald Byrd pleaded guilty to child abuse charges following the death of their daughter, Zona Byrd. Authorities said the young girl was discovered unresponsive in her bed by a family member. When emergency responders arrived, they found that Zona was severely emaciated and malnourished.

Court officials confirmed that Zona weighed just 17.5 pounds at the time of her death — a weight far below what is medically expected for a child her age.

Disturbing Conditions Inside the Home

Police were called to the Byrds’ home on Aiken Street after Zona’s aunt reported that the child was cold and not moving.
