Heard loud booms in Columbia? Fort Jackson confirms what caused them

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities say some unusual noise in northeastern Columbia on Sunday morning has an explanation.

Fort Jackson said it conducted three “controlled detonations” on the training range around 8:35 a.m. on Sunday. WLTX viewers reported hearing three “booms” around the same time.

The Army post added that the detonations were part of “necessary maintenance and that additional training may be conducted, which may mean more explosive sounds at other times…
