DES MOINES, Iowa – The John R. Grubb Community YMCA officially closed its doors Saturday afternoon, with its replacement set to open in the spring.
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines announced the closure at the beginning of the year. The Grubb YMCA, located along 11th Street and College Avenue, opened in 1994.
“People came here, and stayed here, because they felt recognized, respected and valued here,” said Cameron Nicholson, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. “The upcoming closing evokes a lot of emotions, but the overwhelming feeling we have is one of pride – pride in all the staff, volunteers and members, past and present, who made the Grubb Y special for every person who walked in our door.”…
