Money vs. efficiency at center of debate regarding Iowa school funding increase

Let’s start with Iowa public schools.

It looks like Governor Kim Reynolds will get her way in the end. State lawmakers approved a 2% increase for public schools. That’s what Reynolds proposed. The Senate was at 1.75%. The House was at 2.25%.

They met in the middle where the governor was all along. Neither keep up with inflation, nor have any of the increases in recent years. School district superintendents wanted a 5% increase. The World Population Review ranks Iowa 22nd in the country for public schools. Iowa used to be consistently in the top tier for reading and math scores during the 1980s and 1990s.

Politicians in Iowa always say education is the priority. How can they say that when this is the result? Is the concern good money will be thrown after bad?…
