The Alaskan Arctic brought to Omaha: Mallory Kountze Planetarium highlights the effects of climate change

Feb. 27 is recognized as International Polar Bear Day, a time for increased awareness of polar bear conservation efforts and the threats posed to the species by environmental factors, such as melting sea ice caused by climate change.

UNO’s Mallory Kountze Planetarium held two public shows on the evening of Feb. 27, the first starting at 6:30 p.m and the second at 8:00 p.m. Both showtimes featured the same program, starting with a “star-talk” showcase where student planetarium interns, like junior physics major Ariel Guerra-Salazar, utilized the planetarium’s immersive and interactive projection system to point out some well known constellations.

“I think staying curious about space is probably one of the most natural things humans could do,” Guerra-Salazar said. “It’s definitely a very important frontier to keep teaching future generations about.”…
