Neighbors voice opposition to nearly 700 proposed homes ahead of public hearing

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE)— Residents in one part of southwest Allen County gathered Sunday afternoon to voice their concerns and opposition to a housing development that would bring 689 homes to a rural area.

More than three dozen people attended the meeting at Southwest Fire District Station 3.

Coverdale Development, LLC has filed an application with the Allen County Board of Zoning Appeals. The application is for a development called the Communities of Calusa. The application seeks to change the zoning of approximately 170 acres of land from A1 (agricultural) to R1 and R3 (residential). R3 allows for multifamily buildings, like apartments, condos, and townhomes.

The site is bound to the north by Ferguson Road, to the east by Coverdale Road, and to the south by private property off of Winters Road. It is less than a mile from the closest Fort Wayne International Airport runway.
