Dr. Ebony Johnson details Tulsa Public Schools layoffs, student walkouts

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa Public Schools is heading into the final stretch of the school year with major staffing changes, ongoing teacher recruitment, student walkouts and preparations for graduation, Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson said in an interview.

District Office Layoffs

Tulsa Public Schools is eliminating about 50 administrative positions as part of efforts to streamline operations, Johnson said.

She explained that the decisions are driven by budget considerations and a need to reduce duplication of services. Johnson said the district aims to give affected staff time to transition into other critical roles, including teaching positions.

Johnson emphasized that prioritizing efficiency at the district office allows the district to better support students, noting that being “lean but effective” at the top ensures resources are focused where they are most needed.
