University Heights community brings mural back to life

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – On Sunday, the University Heights neighborhood came together to celebrate the restoration of a beloved mural. Lovingly called Honey in the Heart, it was created by Albuquerque muralist Mark Horst in 2018, depicting a long-time resident of the University Heights area who used to keep bees.

Since its creation, however, it has been vandalized with graffiti over the years. This led the community to rehabilitate the mural through a partnership with the goal of bringing the piece back to life.

“The person in the middle is Molly Garcia, who was a longtime neighborhood resident who also had bees. So that was the idea of the honeycomb, and she’s in the center of the mural because she’s kind of the heart of the neighborhood,” said Don Hancock, secretary-treasurer of the University Heights Association.

City leaders say this restoration project is part of an ongoing effort to help beautify, maintain, and preserve art across the city…
