Canadian musher Buddy Streeper is on the brink of breaking George Attla’s longstanding Fur Rondy Open World Championship record

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Since 1946, some of the world’s fastest sled dogs have dashed down 4th avenue and through the city of Anchorage for what is called The Fur Rendezvous Open World Championship sled dog race.

In 1958, a musher from Huslia named George Attla turned heads with a fast team and won his first Fur Rondy. Attla, nicknamed the ‘Huslia Hustler’ went on to become the greatest sprint musher of all-time and one of the sports’ most iconic figures, going on to win 10 Fur Rondy Open World Championships and eight North American Open Championships. Winning his final Fur Rondy in 1982, Attla’s double-digit championships is a record that has stood for nearly half a century.

Canadian musher Blayne “Buddy” Streeper won his first Fur Rondy in 2004 and after stringing together four straight championships from 2007-2010, what was once thought of as a near-untouchable record was now in the picture. With five more wins in six years from 2018-2023 (Covid Cancellation in 2021), Attla’s longstanding record is on the brink of being broken…
