Columbus police officer arrested on strangulation, firearm charges in Delaware County

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 50-year-old officer with the Columbus Division of Police has been charged with strangulation in Delaware County, according to a criminal complaint filed last week.

The complaint filed in the Common Pleas Court of Delaware County says that Jacob Smith was charged with strangulation and illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premises. He was arrested on Feb. 28.

The complaint says that Smith placed a hand on the victim’s neck and squeezed until the victim lost consciousness. Smith then placed both hands on their neck and squeezed, causing the victim to lose consciousness a second time, according to the complaint.
