Grand Rapids man sentenced to 16 years in cocaine, fentanyl bust

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man federal prosecutors say was caught in possession of several pounds of cocaine and fentanyl and running a drug operation out of his home, has been sentenced to more than a decade and a half behind bars.

Byron Swain, 34, was arrested in April 2025, after members of Kent County’s drug team searched his Black Hills neighborhood home and found nearly eight pounds of cocaine, more than 40 grams of fentanyl, drug paraphernalia and a handgun. As a convicted felon, Swain was prohibited from possessing a gun.

In October, after a federal prosecutor took over the case, Swain pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. On Monday, a judge sentenced him to 192 months in prison.

Initial reports from Kent County’s drug team indicated that Swain was caught with nearly 13 pounds of drugs, including 11 pounds of cocaine and a record-breaking 1.7 pounds of fentanyl.
