Cobb, Atlanta police crack down on “teen takeovers”

Cobb County and Atlanta police were on high alert this weekend over concerns that large, loosely organized “teen takeovers” promoted on social media would wreak havoc at Cumberland Mall and other locations.

Why it matters: Social media-fueled gatherings of young people in public spaces have led to property damage and violence in some cities, prompting heightened law enforcement scrutiny.

Catch up quick: Heading into the weekend, Cobb police stepped up social media monitoring and on Saturday increased patrols around Cumberland Mall.

  • Cumberland property management enacted a temporary curfew effective after 3pm Saturday, requiring visitors under 18 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Flashback: Police and mall officials wanted to prevent a repeat of the chaotic prior weekend at The Battery, where more than 100 young people were recorded running through intersections and fighting, according to WSB-TV.

  • “It was just too many kids,” Yasmine Washington, who lives near The Battery, told the station. “I’m talking, like, kids starting at probably like 12. Even younger.”
  • 17 people, including 9 juveniles, were arrested, the station said. Charges include inciting to riot, possession of a firearm during a felony and loitering.

On Friday, Cobb police announced they issued riot charges against two 17-year-old boys who allegedly organized the event, Fox 5 reported.

  • Cobb police did not return Axios’ requests for comment.

State of play: On Saturday, Atlanta Police Department officers arrested 14 people allegedly involved in a “takeover” near the Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail.

  • In a statement, police said they recovered 10 firearms. Charges include aggravated assault, possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18, terroristic threats, and more.

How it works: Quite simply: Someone posts a time and place on TikTok or Discord to meet, the idea catches fire, and people show up. The gatherings are often peaceful but can become chaotic…
