Defensible spaces still not part of Horry Co. ordinances 1 year after wildfire

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — If you own a home near a tree line, you might think of it as scenic. Darryl Jones from the South Carolina Forestry Commission has another word for it.

“End of the day, I see fuel,” Jones, the Forest Protection Chief for SCFC, said. “People buy a house in a forest, and they want the view and all…I may be pessimistic, but I see fuel that if it gets dry and we have the right weather, it could rush toward the home and really cause a threat.”

With the amount of woods surrounding communities in Horry County, Jones said homes should have at least 30 feet of open, or defensible space…
