Fight for Big Creek Lake access escalates with new legislation, multiple lawsuits

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Fishermen fighting for access to Big Creek Lake are now taking their battle to Montgomery.

The controversy began in February 2025, when MAWSS shut down public access to Big Creek Lake, citing the need to protect Mobile’s drinking water from contamination and invasive species. Since then, local residents created a multi-pronged legal and legislative campaign to restore access to the reservoir that serves as the main water source for 350,000 residents in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.
