Mississippi bill aims to hold landlords accountable

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Mississippi House bill aimed at holding landlords accountable for unpaid utility bills is one step closer to becoming law. The bill would criminalize landlords who are not paying the bills on time after being paid by tenants.

Recently, some tenants living in Jackson apartments had their water shut off, even after paying their landlord. State Rep. Clay Mansell (R-District 56) said Jackson isn’t the only city seeing this issue.

“I don’t have exact numbers, but it’s multiple apartment complexes in the state that tenants are paying their water bills, and then the landlord is not paying the water bill to the authority,” he said.
