Fire at Portland outdoor homeless shelter leaves 1 dead

PORTLAND, Ore. — A fire at a city-operated outdoor shelter in North Portland left one person dead Monday evening, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.

Shortly before 6 p.m., dispatch notified fire crews of a potential fire at the shelter site, with reports of a single pod on fire.

“With a visible smoke column or header visible to arriving responders, it was reported over the air that this was an obvious working fire,” PF&R said in a statement. “With numerous callers into dispatch, there were many radio updates being transmitted to responding crews with the most informative message being the pod was ‘almost completely burned to the ground’ at 5:54 p.m., just three minutes after the crews were dispatched.”…
